Two Flames Apart

November 2019

About this piece

Two orange flamingos dominate the foreground, their illuminated plumage set against a nearly black background and a subdued gathering of paler birds. One neck rises almost vertically while the other curves outward, framing a broad interval of darkness. Bright feather edges and sharply defined bills give the composition a sculptural, watchful stillness.

The story

At November’s close, light gathers on two flamingos and leaves much of the flock in shadow. One bird holds its neck tall; the other bends into a long, outward-facing curve. Their feathers carry shades of ember, coral, and pale rose. Between them, a quieter silhouette repeats the curve, its color almost lost to darkness. For this moment, the year’s passing seems less tangible than the fine edges of feathers in the light.
