The Shape Of Unison

About this piece

Four United States Air Force jets bank in close formation, their overlapping wings forming a stepped diagonal across the frame. Bright light picks out white fuselages and red accents against saturated blue, while pale clouds soften the surrounding space. The repeated geometry gives this moment of flight a sense of measured suspension.

The story

On this January day, four aircraft hold their places in an expanse of blue. Light glances across the canopies, revealing helmeted figures within. Red noses point together beyond the frame, while the wings repeat their angles with scarcely a pause between them. At the beginning of the year, the image offers a moment of poised forward motion, its speed held still against the clouds.
