Mike Gedj’s close study of an agave reveals broad, sculptural leaves edged with small reddish spines. Pale impressions trace scalloped patterns across their surfaces, while sunlight shifts the layered greens from cool blue-green to yellow.
The story
I was drawn first to the pointed leaves, then to the quieter patterns running across them. Moving closer, I could see pale scalloped impressions repeating beside the sharp edges, as though each leaf carried a memory of its neighbors. I framed the plant tightly, letting its overlapping forms fill the view. In the sunlight, the greens separated into distinct layers, and what had seemed a single solid shape became a gathering of small differences.
