About this piece

Palm trees frame the beachfront pavilion at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, where low sunlight passes between pale columns onto a patterned plaza. Sweeping bands of blue, lavender, and cream meet elongated shadows, bringing a fluid rhythm to the ordered architecture.

The story

I framed the pavilion between the palms, leaving room for the pavement to lead the eye. Its colored curves seemed to carry the sea into the square, while the low sun drew another pattern across them. Beyond the columns, a narrow strip of ocean held the horizon. I wanted to keep that balance in the photograph: the bright geometry of a public place and the open water waiting just beyond it.
