Edges of Flame

About this piece

Scarlet-edged succulent leaves fan across the frame, their golden centers set against a luminous blur of green and yellow. Selective focus reveals fine surface textures while softening surrounding foliage, giving the sharply pointed forms the appearance of small flames.

The story

I moved closer until the plant became a gathering of color rather than a shape I could name. Red traced each pointed leaf, while yellow pooled near the center and green filled the spaces beyond. I wanted to keep the fine texture of those nearest surfaces without losing the softness around them. Through the lens, this small patch of foliage held the intensity of a fire, with none of its movement.
