About this piece
Two monumental fluted columns rise on either side of an ornamented stone recess, their lines converging toward carved capitals and a narrow expanse of sky. Warm light reveals the pitted surfaces and masonry joints, while deep central shadows lend the nearly symmetrical composition a solemn stillness.
The story
Late June light settles into the long channels of the stone. From below, the columns seem to draw closer as they climb, narrowing the pale sky between their carved crowns. Scrolls and leaves emerge from the shadowed center, small flourishes held within the massive architecture. The eye travels upward, leaving the rough, granular surface for the brightness above.
