About this piece

Whitewashed roofs and blue church domes descend toward the sea in this sunlit view of Santorini. Mike Gedj frames the architecture through a foreground of curved plaster and stone steps, balancing the densely layered village against the open expanse of water.

The story

I paused above the steps, where the white walls curved around a small cluster of terracotta pots. From here, the domes seemed to gather the blue of the sea and hold it close to the village. I framed the pink bell tower at the edge, letting the water stretch beyond it. What drew me was the contrast: so many walls, terraces, and turns, beside a blue expanse with almost nothing to interrupt it.
