The story

In the first days of January, light lays bright intervals across the empty passage. Each arch holds another within it, drawing the eye farther into the brickwork. Amber surfaces give way to deep brown shadow, and loose gravel catches small points of brightness along the floor. At the far end, darkness interrupts the repetition, leaving the passage's destination unseen.
