Small Scarlet Hours

About this piece

Scarlet berries punctuate a dense field of green, while a slender stem of pale pink blossoms extends into the open space above. Selective focus draws attention to the fruit and leaf veins, allowing the surrounding foliage to dissolve into soft layers of color.

The story

I framed the berries low in the photograph, leaving room for the pale flowers above them. What held my attention was the distance between those two gestures: one dense and red, the other almost weightless. Around them, the leaves filled every opening with green. Looking through the lens, I could let that abundance soften without losing it entirely, keeping a few small surfaces clear enough to hold the light.
