Lanterns Upon Turquoise

About this piece
Lanterns on circular floats, encircled by colorful glass spheres and netting, punctuate a brilliant turquoise pool. Strong daylight reveals submerged wood and the textured bottom, while ripples loosen the lanterns’ reflections. The vertical composition leads from a prominent foreground ornament toward smaller, widely spaced forms, creating a playful yet tranquil rhythm.
The story
July daylight fills the clear water, leaving little hidden beneath its surface. Around each dark lantern, glass spheres gather small concentrations of blue, green, amber, and red. A submerged branch crosses beneath the nearest float, its warm brown grain interrupting the turquoise. Farther away, ripples stretch the reflections into wavering silhouettes. The lanterns remain unlit, their quiet promise of evening held within the brightness of the day.
