Hull And Highland

About this piece

Stacks of overturned aluminum boats fill the foreground, their ribbed hulls catching cool light against green and gold shoreline grasses. A narrow dock leads toward the lake, while houses along the opposite shore and successive wooded ridges extend the composition into the distance. The contrast between clustered boats and open water gives the scene a restful, suspended quality.

The story

Late June brings gold into the grasses beside the lake. Beneath the trees, overturned boats hold blue reflections along their weathered ribs. Beyond them, bright kayaks punctuate the narrow channel beside the dock, where a small shelter reflects in still water. Across the lake, houses rest at the foot of the forest, dwarfed by the long rise of the ridges. Summer feels spacious here, with room between the waiting boats and the far shore.
