About this piece

Mike Gedj’s close study of layered leaves brings vivid green into contrast with mottled scarlet and gold. Patches of sunlight reveal branching veins, curled edges, and small blemishes, while deep shadows give the botanical composition its depth.

The story

I found my frame in the contrast between one small green leaf and the broad red surface beneath it. Looking closer, I could see how the light picked out each vein and caught the worn edges of the larger leaves. I wanted to hold that difference in the photograph: the quiet shape of green against so much fiery colour, with the shadows leaving parts of the scene undisclosed.
