About this piece

Converging railings and weathered planks draw the eye toward a small blue-roofed building at the end of the pier. Red light beneath the blue lamp shades punctuates the pale sky, while warm color across the timber contrasts with the softly textured water.

The story

I looked along the pier and found my eye moving between two kinds of distance: the long run of boards beneath me and the open water on either side. The lamps gave that openness a rhythm, each blue shade holding a small red glow. I kept the worn timber in the foreground and the people small. What held me there was the way an ordinary walkway seemed to reach directly into the color of the sky.
