Converging railings and weathered planks draw the eye toward a small shelter above the water. Pale blue benches, scattered birds, and distant anglers punctuate the pier’s measured geometry, while a glowing red lamp adds a warm accent against the muted sky.
The story
I looked along the boards toward the shelter, letting the railings carry my eye out over the water. Two birds occupied the open space ahead of me; another stood on the right-hand rail. Beyond them, people gathered with fishing rods beneath the lamps. I framed the pier with room for the pale sky, drawn to the small red glow overhead and the way this ordinary walkway seemed to hold its own quiet distance from shore.
