About this piece

A sand-dusted wooden path descends between rope-linked posts and dense grasses toward a palm-lined beach and turquoise water. Warm sunlight picks out the grain of a weathered shelter and casts long shadows across the walkway, while two distant sailboats give scale to the open horizon. Receding posts and arching fronds draw the eye from the textured foreground into a luminous, unhurried distance.

The story

The year is only two days old, and January opens here in green, gold, and blue. Sand gathers between the boards, softening the path beneath the sharp shadows of its ropes. Beside the weathered shelter, grasses partly conceal a bicycle, a small trace of arrival. Beyond the palms, two sailboats rest against the bright water, and the walkway ends where the shore begins.
