The Vermilion Threshold

About this piece

An orange-red paneled door punctuates a rough stone wall, its arched surround framing the photograph’s strongest color. Curved steps rise through the foreground, where hard sunlight and pointed shadows create a counterpoint to the irregular masonry. The closed entrance gives this brightly lit composition a quiet, contained mood.

The story

July light reaches the doorway and turns its painted panels a brilliant orange-red. Along the wall, each dark stone holds a different edge of shadow. The steps curve upward from the shaded foreground, drawing the eye toward the small metal handle. At the right, stiff green leaves extend into the light. The door remains closed, and the passage rests between invitation and privacy.
