The story

July light falls across the white terrace and catches the yellow paint still clinging to the boat. Rope gathers at the bow, and the oars lie out of reach of the water. Below, a cruise ship occupies a small patch of the immense blue bay, its orderly decks a counterpoint to the splintered boards. Thin wakes mark the distance. Here above the sea, the old hull holds only light and shadow.
