Sea lions lie closely together on a weathered wooden dock, their rounded bodies filling the frame. Warm light picks out brown fur, pale whiskers, and the folds of a curved neck against cooler shadows. The diagonal planks and heavy chain give a firm geometric setting to this scene of unguarded rest.
The story
Late June light settles across fur and worn timber. A sea lion rests its cheek against the planks, one dark flipper folded over its side. Behind it, another turns its whiskered muzzle toward the light, eyes closed. The dock holds their gathered weight, its splintered edges and iron fittings framing a quiet interval.
