Two sea lions rise face to face at the edge of a floating wooden dock, their muzzles meeting above a cluster of reclining bodies. Light catches their glossy coats and the wet grain of the timber, setting warm browns against cool blue water. The central pair lends a moment of alertness to an otherwise languid composition.
The story
June light glints along wet backs and the worn edges of the dock. Among the overlapping bodies, two sea lions lift their heads until their whiskers meet. One broad flipper hangs over the timber while the water gathers into small ripples below. Around this brief contact, the others remain at rest, their rounded forms filling almost every spare board.
