The story

September light falls across the steps, leaving a narrow shadow beneath each uneven edge. The eye climbs through low scrub toward the great wall, then pauses where solid rock gives way to sky. Wisps of cloud stretch above the ridge, their delicate curves answering the arch below. Along this empty ascent, the measured rhythm of the steps meets the slower rhythms written into stone.
