The Shape of Endurance

MG-1905

About this piece

A deeply furrowed tree dominates this black-and-white desert landscape, its divided trunk and spreading branches set against an open sky. Strong sunlight defines the grain of the wood, the rounded rock formations at left, and the scattered scrub, while branching shadows extend across the foreground. The composition holds an intricate living form within a spare, still expanse.

The story

September light falls across the bare ground, catching the ridges of the trunk and leaving its hollows dark. The tree opens in several directions, its leafy branches threaded with exposed wood. Beside it, rounded rock rises in broad layers, a quieter counterpoint to the tangled limbs. Across the gravel, the tree's shadow gathers these scattered shapes into one.
