The Weight of Sky

About this piece

A broad natural rock arch encloses a sweep of sky in this black-and-white landscape. Strong sunlight articulates the fractured stone and scattered foreground rocks, while a shrub at lower right introduces a fine, branching texture. The low viewpoint gives the arch a monumental presence, balanced by the delicate clouds within its opening.

The story

September light rests on the broken ledges and reaches into the shallow seams of the rock. Beneath the arch, the sky opens like a pause in the stone. Thin clouds draw pale lines through that opening, their softness set against the heavy, fissured curve. At the edge of the rocky slope, a shrub catches the light in its smallest branches.
