About this piece

A weathered, leafless tree dominates this black-and-white landscape, its deeply furrowed trunk opening into a lattice of angular branches. Strong sunlight defines the wood grain and casts branching shadows across sandy ground, while a natural rock arch at left and clustered rock formations at right frame the distant terrain. Wispy clouds soften the sky above the stark, sculptural foreground.

The story

September light falls across the exposed wood, tracing each ridge and split. At the tree’s feet, fallen limbs lie among low scrub and patches of sand. Beyond its tangled branches, an opening in the rock holds a small piece of sky. Thin clouds stretch over stone and timber, their soft edges answering the hard contours below.
