The story

September light rests on the red ledges and catches the small green crowns of desert shrubs. Across the open ground, stone towers stand apart, their shadowed faces edged with warmth. A pale ribbon of cloud stretches toward the great cliff, softening the sky above its fractured rim. The eye moves from a bare, twisted branch to the distant pillars, finding a different measure of time in each.
