About this piece

A broad evergreen with a deeply furrowed, twisting trunk stands against a sloping face of reddish sandstone. Bright sunlight picks out its dense foliage and the yellow flowering plants scattered across the foreground, while shallow cavities cast dark accents in the rock. The branching tree interrupts the stone’s long diagonal lines, giving the composition a quiet, resilient presence.

The story

September light settles over the sandstone, finding each hollow and seam. Beneath the green canopy, exposed wood folds into ridges and opens into shadow. Yellow flowers gather close to the ground, bright against the reddish dust. The eye follows the trunk upward, then rests where the smallest leaves meet the broad expanse of stone.
