The story

Late May brings a summerlike glow to Miami Beach, where the lifeguard tower holds its bright colors against a sky of gold and gray. Beneath its wide eaves, the window remains dark, and yellow rails catch the light. Farther along the sand, a few people gather beside a striped umbrella, small against the water. Birds cross the open sky while the shallow ridges of the beach alternate between warmth and shadow.
