Small Crowns Of Fire

About this piece
Two open milkweed flowers, with yellow crowns and swept-back orange-red petals, rise beside a cluster of tightly closed pink buds. Bright light traces the slender green stems and leaf veins, while shallow focus dissolves the background into turquoise, rose, and violet. The upright blooms lend a sculptural clarity to this saturated botanical study.
The story
On the last day of November, two small flowers hold their yellow crowns above a gathering of closed buds. Orange petals fold downward, their edges bright against the cool blue haze of leaves. Each slender stem carries a different stage of unfolding. Here, the year's approach to its end shares the frame with forms still waiting to open.
