A Curve of Quiet

About this piece

A pelican stands on a weathered wooden railing, its neck curved and long bill lowered into its feathers. Fine plumage and pronounced wood grain contrast with the softly rendered water and orange-pink sky, while the low sun balances the bird’s substantial form. The intimate gesture brings a sense of stillness to the luminous waterfront.

The story

On this March day, the low sun holds just above the water, surrounded by pink and amber light. The pelican bends inward, its long bill disappearing against the feathers of its body. Webbed feet rest on the ridged wood as brightness gathers across the ripples behind it. For a moment, the broad expanse of water seems to narrow to this small act of tending.
