Leaves of Ember

About this piece

Overlapping succulent leaves rise from broad lower tiers to pointed tips, their yellow-green centers edged in vivid orange and red. Shallow depth of field isolates the plant’s layered structure while surrounding foliage dissolves into fields of gold and green.

The story

I moved closer until the surrounding foliage became a wash of color and the leaves filled the frame. What caught my attention was the shift from green at their bases to orange and red along their edges. Each pointed leaf seemed to hold a little of the light apart from the others. Through the lens, this small plant took on the presence of a flame, its layered growth entirely still.
