Scarlet Among Leaves

About this piece

Scarlet flowers emerge through overlapping green foliage, their yellow accents bright against a pale, luminous background. Selective focus reveals fine hairs along a central bud and textured leaf surfaces, while surrounding forms dissolve into broad fields of color.

The story

I moved closer until the flowers filled the frame and the space beyond them became almost white. What held my attention was the narrow red bud between the leaves, its fine hairs catching the light. Around it, open flowers reached in different directions, bright with yellow and scarlet. I let the nearest foliage soften into green, keeping that small, precise edge of the bud as the place for the eye to rest.
