Seen from below, palm trunks enter from the edges of the frame, their crowns surrounding an open field of blue. Saturated greens and fine, overlapping fronds give the photograph a graphic rhythm, balanced by the spacious sky.

The story

I looked up and found the palms making a loose circle around the sky. From below, their trunks seemed to lean toward one another, yet the blue between them remained wide and uninterrupted. I framed out the ground, letting the nearest crown reach in from the right. What held my attention was that balance: the intricate edges of the leaves and the simple pleasure of so much open space.
