A Canopy of Sparks

About this piece

Seen from below, a dense spray of elongated leaves fans outward around a tree trunk, punctuated by small pink and cream blooms. Backlighting turns the foliage luminous yellow-green, revealing surface markings while the sky and softened palm fronds open the composition.

The story

I looked up along the trunk and found a small garden suspended against the sky. From below, the leaves overlapped like blades of green glass, their dark marks still visible in the light. The flowers drew my eye upward, each held on a slender stem above the crowded foliage. I framed them with the palms softened at the edges, letting the blue sky give this dense tangle room to breathe.
