About this piece

Five jets repeat the same swept silhouette across a cloud-filled sky, their red noses pointing toward the right edge of the frame. Seen from below, their patterned undersides and measured spacing create a crisp geometry against the soft cloud forms.

The story

I followed the formation across the blue, drawn as much to the spaces between the aircraft as to the aircraft themselves. From below, their markings became a repeating pattern, each red nose carrying the eye in the same direction. I framed them against the clouds, where hard edges met something without a fixed shape. In that fraction of a second, speed became an arrangement of lines, and the sky held them all.
