About this piece

A cloud-painted lifeguard tower rises above rippled sand, its saturated blues contrasting with the gold and peach light along the ocean horizon. Metal supports and railings frame the open shore, while birds and a distant vessel lend scale to the expansive sky.

The story

I framed the tower to one side, leaving room for the low sun and the birds crossing the water. Its painted clouds caught my eye: a second sky held in wood and metal, just above the sand. Beyond the railings, the ocean stretched into a thin, luminous line. I wanted to keep both things in the photograph—the sturdy geometry of a place built for watching, and the light that would not stay.
