A sweeping diagonal of white surf divides brilliant turquoise water from a densely populated beach. Seen from above, umbrellas, swimmers, and beachgoers form a mosaic of color and gesture, balancing the open water with the intricate rhythms of summer recreation.

The story

From above, I watched the shoreline gather hundreds of small, separate moments. Someone stood at the edge of the foam; others floated beyond it, scattered across the turquoise water. On the sand, umbrellas overlapped like patches of bright fabric, each sheltering a little world. I framed the beach along its diagonal, leaving room for the blue to stretch outward. What drew me in was that contrast: so much activity beside such an expansive field of water.
