About this piece

Mike Gedj frames a weathered bridge receding toward a distant shoreline, its exposed steel spans held above smooth water by massive concrete piers. Amber light and lavender-gray clouds set the structure’s corroded surfaces against the soft reflections below.

The story

I followed the bridge with my eyes from the distant shore to the abrupt end of its ironwork. Above it, the clouds held a fierce gold; below, the water softened that brightness into pale bands of color. I wanted to keep both textures in the frame: the roughness of a structure coming apart and the unbroken surface beneath it. Between them, the concrete piers marked out a steady rhythm across the water.
