About this piece

Rope-linked posts guide a weathered boardwalk through dune grasses toward an open beach and turquoise water. Angular shadows cross the sandy planks, while the shelter’s silvered timber and arching palm fronds frame the sunlit approach.

The story

I paused where the sand had begun to soften the edges of the boardwalk. Ahead, the water formed a bright turquoise band between the palms; beside me, the old shelter held its own quieter shades of gray and gold. I framed the path with its ropes and leaning grasses, letting the shadows lead outward. What drew me was this small threshold, where the worn wood gives way to beach and open water.
