A Measure of Green

About this piece

A tightly framed palm leaf fills the photograph with radiating ribs and translucent green tissue. Light reveals its fine texture, while deepening shadows turn the repeating folds into a study of rhythm and tonal contrast.

The story

I moved close enough for the leaf to fill my view, leaving the surrounding world outside the frame. Light passing through its folds revealed greens I might otherwise have missed: yellow near the brightest patches, then richer tones along the ribs. I followed those dark lines with my eye before settling on the composition. What held me there was the balance between repetition and difference, each narrow section carrying the light a little differently.
