Embers Among Leaves

About this piece

Scarlet flower tubes radiate across the frame, their open mouths edged in golden orange. Selective focus draws attention to the small blossoms while surrounding foliage dissolves into broad fields of green and shadow.

The story

I was drawn first to the red, then to the small orange openings that gave the cluster its delicate scale. Through the lens, the surrounding leaves became softer, leaving just a few edges and veins to anchor the flowers. I held the composition around those open mouths, with room for the darkness beside them. What interested me was the contrast: such insistent colour, held within the quiet shelter of green.
