Cream and ochre seashells hang from bare, textured branches against a vivid blue sky with faint clouds.

Where Shells Gather

MG-1009

April 2019

About this piece

Seashells rest on the forks of bare branches, their ribbed surfaces and worn cavities illuminated by bright sunlight. A nearly horizontal limb anchors the composition, while smaller twigs interrupt the expansive blue sky, lending this unusual arrangement a playful stillness.

The story

In the April light, the branches carry shells instead of leaves. One presents its ridged exterior; another opens its weathered interior to the sky, revealing a small terrain of pits and encrustations. Their pale curves soften the angular wood. The eye travels from shell to shell, then rests in the blue between them.
