The story

September begins with a ribbon of gold along the horizon. Beside the dock, the little boat rests on its mooring, its empty interior warmed by the light. Ripples loosen its dark reflection and carry bright fragments toward the wooden planks. Beyond the low, wooded shore, the water opens beneath clouds whose shaded centers hold the blue of the sky.
