About this piece
Two United States Air Force jets overlap in the frame as they pass in opposite directions, their white surfaces brightly lit against a blue sky. Red noses and striped wings punctuate the central composition, while motion blur and trailing smoke lend tension to the surrounding openness.
The story
On this January day, the sky holds two opposing lines of flight. For an instant, white wings overlap and red noses point toward separate edges of the frame. Smoke stretches behind them in uneven ribbons, marking the air they leave behind. The crossing passes; the blue seems spacious again.
