About this piece

Six jets cross a saturated blue sky in a close, stepped formation, their red noses pointing left and white smoke streaming behind them. Bright light defines the pale fuselages and dark wing undersides, while the spreading trails soften the aircraft’s precise geometry.

The story

On this second day of January, the new year opens onto an expanse of blue. Six pointed noses hold their course, each aircraft separated from the next by a measured interval of sky. Light catches the canopies, and white smoke gathers into rippled ribbons behind the wings. The machines keep their sharp outlines while their passing slowly unravels.
