About this piece

Two U.S. Air Force jets align in close formation against an uninterrupted blue sky, one upright and the other inverted. Sunlight catches the canopies and white fuselages, while deep underside shadows sharpen their near-mirrored arrangement. The opposing tail fins give this moment of speed an unexpected visual balance.

The story

On January 2, the new year opens onto a field of blue without a horizon. Two pointed noses face left, their red tips repeating like marks on a score. One cockpit turns toward the sky; the other faces the empty space below. Light glints along the metal, and faint exhaust trails stretch behind. For this instant, motion takes the shape of stillness.
