A Thread of Violet

About this piece

Dense clusters of purple berries trace a branch through overlapping green leaves, with smaller yellow-green fruits visible below. Selective focus draws attention to the berries’ rounded surfaces and the leaves’ fine veins, setting their textures against a luminous blur of foliage.

The story

I noticed the purple first, a line of unexpected color held within the green. Moving closer, I followed the clusters along the branch, from the small green fruits below to the richly colored berries above. The leaves crossed in front of them like shutters, revealing some and sheltering others. I framed the photograph around that partial concealment, letting the surrounding foliage soften until the berries and a few leaf veins held my attention.
