About this piece

At the intersection marked Whitehead and Fleming, mile zero signs punctuate a sunlit streetscape beside a pale clapboard building. The tall streetlamp balances the projecting green sign, while bicycles and a scarlet hydrant anchor the foreground. Saturated cyan sky and sharply defined shadows give the quiet corner a vivid, graphic clarity.

The story

Late August light fills the space between the streetlamp and the clapboard wall. Above the sidewalk, a large green zero announces an ending, while the street continues past palms and low buildings. A bicycle with a pink wheel rim rests in the narrow shade, its patterned basket turned toward the road. Overhead wires cross the blue sky, carrying the eye beyond the numbered destination.
