Beneath the Palm Crown

About this piece

A leaning coconut palm dominates a lush landscape of ferns, broad leaves, and smaller palms beside a narrow stream. Strong sunlight picks out the ringed trunk and rocky bank, while deep shade gathers beneath the vegetation. The sweeping canopy and diagonal trunk frame an expansive blue sky, balancing dense growth with open space.

The story

Late November finds this green enclosure full of light. Coconuts cluster beneath the tallest palm, whose long leaflets draw fine lines across the blue. Below, the stream holds darker fragments of the canopy between its rocky banks. A small bird stands at the water’s edge, almost absorbed into the stone and shadow. The eye descends from the brilliant sky and rests beside it.
