The Weight Of Rest

About this piece

Sea lions lie close together on a weathered wooden dock, their overlapping bodies filling the frame. Directional sunlight draws out bronze tones in their coats and illuminates fine whiskers against shadow. The curve of the foreground animal contrasts with the diagonal planks, lending the composition a sense of weight and repose.

The story

Late June light settles across the crowded boards. One sea lion rests its muzzle against the wood, while another tips its whiskered face upward behind it. A dark flipper lies folded across a broad flank, its smooth surface contrasting with the splintered grain below. At the dock’s edge, a metal chain catches the light; within this close gathering, the day seems to pause.
