About this piece

A gnarled tree stands before the opening of a broad natural rock arch, its tangled branches crossing the exposed sky. Strong light defines the grain of the trunk and the fractured stone, casting branching shadows across the foreground. The black-and-white composition sets the tree’s intricate contours against the weight of the arch, creating a mood of austere stillness.

The story

September light falls across the rock, tracing each ridge and split in the weathered trunk. Beneath the stone span, patches of foliage gather among bare, twisting limbs. The tree casts a second, darker tangle across the ground. Through the opening, the sky offers a smooth interval between all these rough surfaces.
