The Weight of Sky

About this piece

A natural rock arch fills the black-and-white frame, its fractured surface spanning an opening onto wispy clouds and rounded rock formations. The low viewpoint emphasizes the arch’s mass, while strong sunlight and deep shade articulate the uneven stone. Beneath its sweeping curve, the open sky offers a quiet counterweight.

The story

September light reaches the exposed stone and leaves the underside of the arch in shade. Across the opening, thin clouds draw pale strokes through the sky. The eye follows a fissure along the rock, then drops toward the bright boulders beyond. For a moment, the immense span seems to hold nothing but air.
